Adam Welch, the former Director of Greenwich House Pottery and now Executive Director of the Princeton Arts Council, is steeped in the history and development of Greenwich House, said that even from the very beginning, Greenwich House was a place of the arts. Mrs. Whitney was on the board from early on and gave money to start the clay modeling and carpentry programs. The handicraft school became a place to train children outside of the factory environment. Adults started coming too after work and the programs quickly morphed into children and adult classes.

Whitney established the Art School at Greenwich House before opening the Whitney Museum of Art. To support the growing arts program, Greenwich House established a Workshop Building at 16 Jones Street in 1928, and in 1948, the Pottery workshop took over, where it still operates today. Greenwich is notable for its maritime history and for giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time.

No matter what program individuals participate in, everyone receives the care and support they need to live a more fulfilling life. Today Greenwich House provides art education, senior service and behavioral health programs including an after-school, summer arts camp, nursery school, senior centers and senior health clinic, substance abuse clinics and a program for children who have suffered from abuse. Greenwich House and TCC share common missions, operate similar programs, and serve overlapping populations. Two multi-service organizations, Greenwich House and the Caring Community (TCC), will more efficiently and effectively meet the needs of Greenwich Village seniors by consolidating their management and operations. Specifically, TCC will be established as an affiliate corporation of Greenwich House, and its four senior centers will be solely managed by Greenwich House. The consolidation of administrative functions will increase operating efficiencies, reduce costs through bulk purchasing arrangements, and consolidate many “back-office” functions such as accounting, human resources, information technology, and fundraising.

Founded in 1905, Greenwich House Music School was founded as a place for immigrant children and now provides music, art, and dance education for both children and adults.
